How to Password-protect a folder?

In our current world set up a windows login password, all is safe and secure, right? unfortunately, it's not right. Windows login password is the very basic level of protection mainly keep your files and folder safe from the others who may use your computer. Most of Windows OS version doesn't include password-protect a folder. We can use third-party password protection software to keep folders safe from cybercrime. For example, In case your laptop or pc stolen then a thief can boot up your computer but cant manipulated your drive file as because we have already secured the folder with a password hence password-protect a folder is important.

Most important question Why Should You Password Protect Your Files?


  • Prevent accidental deletion: In case if you share your pc with someone else and somehow He/She accidentally edited or deleted your important files hence we need password-protect a folder and files, If we are using Password-protect files then while deleting or editing time will require a password to view or edit the file. An extra layer for File Security: In terms of Cybersafe we always need an additional layer of file security in case of gets hacked or stolen other side not able to access your most important file easily. so better to use a good cyber hygnic.

Windows 8 and Windows 10 Its is not possible to enable password-protect a folder in windows8 and windows 10. Need to download third-party software or using a zipped folder. In case if you decided to use a third party then make sure you download it from an official website.


1) Zipped Folder Solution Password-protect a folder with a zipped file is a pretty good solution in terms of cyber safe Step1) In Windows Explorer, highlight after that right-click on the file you would like to put into a zipped file for password-protect

Step2) Select Send to then choose zip folder (compressed).


3) Double click the zipped file then select the file tab and Add a password for reference please check the below image.


Step4) Fill out the promoted information then click apply to continue Hide a folder


When we hide a folder or file in windows based OS the folder or file will not appear in the directory list unless we unchecked the Don't show hidden files,folders or drives setting.

Step 1) Right-click on the folder or files that you wanted to hide Select Properties

Step2) Click on the General Tab under the Attributes section check Hidden Step 3) Finally hit on Apply.


Notes: in case if folder and files are still visible in the directory then you will need to enable one more setting.


Step1) In windows explorer click on File Tab

Step2) Select Options, after that the View tab.

Step3) Under Hidden files and folder select Don't show hidden files, folders, or drives.


For showing hidden files folder just need to click on Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
